Pop-up gazebo, marquee or reception tent: which to choose for your event?

The words are often confused, but they refer to very different structures in range, in capacity and in price. The clear comparison to choose without going wrong.

“Pop-up gazebo”, “marquee”, “reception tent”: in everyday speech, these terms are used interchangeably. Yet they cover structures with very different logics — from the small folding shelter to the prestige structure for 300 guests. Choosing the wrong format means risking an under-equipped event… or a wasted budget.

This comparison clarifies what each term covers, what use each structure suits, its capacities and its budget positioning. The aim: to give you the benchmarks to ask for the right structure from the outset.

Spoiler: there is no “best” structure in absolute terms, only the one that matches your number of guests, your venue, your budget and the effect you are after.

The pop-up gazebo: the modular shelter

The pop-up gazebo (or folding tent) is the simplest and most economical structure. Light, set up in a few minutes, it suits small formats and supporting uses.

It is used for a stand, a buffet, a bar, a cloakroom, a market shelter or a small family reception. Beyond a few dozen people, or for a quality seated event, it quickly reaches its limits: low height, basic looks, limited wind resistance.

  • Use: small event, annexe (bar, catering), stand
  • Capacity: a few people up to ~50
  • Strengths: economical, fast, modular
  • Limits: reduced looks and volume, ill-suited to prestige

The marquee: the all-rounder for large capacities

The marquee is the go-to structure for medium to large receptions. A solid frame (steel or aluminium poles), PVC canvas, closable walls: it offers a large, versatile volume, from a 100-guest wedding to a 1,000-person convention.

It offers the best floor-area-to-price ratio for large capacities. It accepts flooring, heating, lighting and all the options. Its look, more “neutral” than a prestige tent, transforms with decoration.

  • Use: wedding, corporate party, convention, gala
  • Capacity: 80 to 1,000+ people
  • Strengths: large volume, versatile, good floor-area-to-price ratio
  • Limits: looks to be worked on through the decor

The reception tent: the umbrella category

“Reception tent” is the generic term: it refers to any temporary structure intended to host an event, the marquee included. But in commercial use, it often evokes the more upmarket structures beyond the standard marquee:

The nomadic stretch tent (elastic canvas on aluminium poles) for a contemporary silhouette; the silhouette / sailcloth tent (translucent canvas, wooden poles) for the high-end wedding; the crystal tent or the orangery (glazed) for exceptional receptions. The choice is then made on style and level of range.

  • Use: from the contemporary cocktail to the prestige wedding
  • Capacity: 50 to 300 people depending on the model
  • Strengths: strong looks, light, premium finish
  • Limits: budget higher than the standard marquee

How to choose?

Four questions are enough to guide the choice: how many guests? what budget? what venue (size, access, ground)? what level of prestige are you after?

For a small supporting event, the pop-up gazebo is enough. For a large, versatile capacity at the best price, the marquee is the obvious choice. For a wedding or a reception where looks matter as much as function, a stretch, silhouette or crystal tent, or an orangery, makes the difference.

FAQ

Vos questions, nos réponses

The pop-up gazebo (or folding tent) is a small, light and economical structure, set up in a few minutes, suited to small events and supporting uses (bar, stand, buffet). The marquee is a larger and sturdier structure, with a fixed frame and PVC canvas, designed to host 80 to more than 1,000 people with flooring, heating and walls. The gazebo gets you by; the marquee hosts a genuine reception.

For a very small intimate wedding or a short ceremony, one or several gazebos can do the job. But for a classic wedding (80 guests and up) with a seated dinner and dancing, the gazebo quickly shows its limits (volume, looks, resistance). A marquee or a reception tent is then far better suited, in both comfort and finish.

Not exactly. “Reception tent” is the generic term that covers all event structures, including the marquee. In commercial use, it often refers to the more upmarket structures (stretch, silhouette, crystal, orangery). In other words: every marquee is a reception tent, but not every reception tent is a marquee.

For large capacities, the classic marquee offers the best floor-area-to-price ratio: it maximises capacity per square metre. For a small event, the pop-up gazebo is unbeatable on budget. For a wedding where looks matter, a stretch or silhouette tent justifies its extra cost with a markedly superior finish. The “right” choice therefore depends on your priority: volume, budget or prestige.

It depends on the available area, the access (room for the setup lorries), the nature of the ground and the configuration (slope, obstacles). A prior technical visit lets you confirm which structure can be installed and under what conditions. It is the step that avoids unpleasant surprises on setup day.
