Winter wedding in a tent: heating, lighting, budget

A winter wedding in a tent is perfectly feasible, as long as four points are settled when you book: heating, lighting, flooring and snow. Here is what to ask your hire company and what the official sources say.

In winter, a reception tent is no longer just a shelter from the sun: it becomes a proper room, heated, lit and set on ground that has to stay usable. The question is not whether it is possible, but what you need to plan on top of a summer wedding.

December to February dates are booked from the autumn. October is therefore the right time to settle the structure, the heating and the power supply, which decide the comfort of the whole evening.

This article covers what is specific to winter. For heating options in detail, see the article on heating a tent or marquee; for wind resistance, the article on wind and storms on the day. The rules quoted come from official sources read on 12 October 2026; they do not replace the advice of your town hall.

Why winter changes the planning

In summer the tent protects from sun and rain; in winter it must also keep the heat in and stand up to snow. Four things join the usual list: sized heating, lighting designed for night, flooring that insulates from damp, and a procedure for snow or wind.

Night falls early in winter: the ceremony and cocktail often take place in artificial light. Lighting is no longer a decorative detail, it is part of the organisation.

Heating the tent without surprises

Heating is chosen with the hire company, according to the volume, the configuration of the sides and the energy available on site. State the date, venue and number of guests in your quote request, so that they propose a suitable solution rather than a generic appliance.

Santé publique France points out that cold promotes cardiovascular and respiratory conditions. As a tip, think mainly of elderly or frail guests, young children and people who spend time standing at the entrance: plan a clearly heated area away from door draughts.

  • Ask what type of heating is offered and the output planned for your volume.
  • Ask where the heat source will be placed and how it is supplied (electricity, fuel).
  • Plan an enclosed entrance or porch to limit draughts.
  • Check that the site's power supply can carry the whole installation (heating, lighting, sound, caterer).

Carbon monoxide: the rule not to overlook

Combustion appliances can produce carbon monoxide. Santé publique France describes it as a colourless, odourless, tasteless and non-irritating gas, behind many poisonings in the winter period.

The official guidance on Service-public.fr is clear: always place generators outside buildings, do not run supplementary heaters for more than 2 hours at a time, and never use appliances not designed for it to heat or cook indoors (cooker, brazier, barbecue). If poisoning is suspected: ventilate, switch off the appliances, leave the premises and call 15, 18 or 112.

The Service-public.fr page itself states that the information may have changed since its publication in November 2024. For a specific installation, it is up to the hire company to say how its heating is supplied and protected.

Lighting for the night

Warm lighting does a lot for a winter tent: string lights, chandeliers, mood lighting, a lit path to the entrance. Also plan the surroundings: car park, access and toilets should be lit so guests can move around safely on ground that may be slippery.

For ideas and solutions, see the article on lighting a reception tent. If the tent is open to the public (50 people or more), the safety regulations also provide for emergency lighting, whose self-contained units must be charged before opening (article CTS 31 bis).

The ground: insulate, drain, protect

In winter, a site can be waterlogged, frozen or muddy. A floor insulates from cold and damp, and stops guests walking through mud in party clothes. The flooring is decided at the same time as the structure, because it affects the headroom and vehicle access.

See the article on flooring and ground for a reception tent for the options. At the technical visit, tell the hire company about wet areas, slopes and places where water collects.

Snow, ice and wind: the procedure

For a tent open to the public, article CTS 7 of the safety regulations provides for evacuation if snowfall exceeds 4 centimetres, insofar as snow accumulation on the roof could not be avoided (heating, clearing…), or if the normal wind exceeds 100 km/h, unless a higher value is justified by a calculation note. These thresholds apply to the structure; for yours, ask the hire company for the values used.

Météo-France publishes a warning by département, including for snow and ice and extreme cold. Yellow: be attentive; orange: be very vigilant; red: absolute vigilance is required. Agree in advance with the hire company, the couple and the caterer who decides on moving out, and from which colour.

Also think about guests' journeys: a snow or ice episode affects the road as much as the tent. Plan a transport plan B for elderly guests.

The budget: where it shifts in winter

In winter the quote has more lines: heating, lighting, flooring, power. The price varies widely with the structure, the area and the options; we give no amounts here. For figures, see the article on the price of a wedding tent.

To compare two quotes, check that the same lines appear in both: heating, lighting, flooring, power supply, setup and takedown. A quote that forgets the heating looks cheaper, but the cost comes back later.

Winter checklist

To settle with the hire company and the town hall before the date:

  • Structure, area and configuration confirmed for your format (see the area table).
  • Heating sized, energy source and location known.
  • Lighting of the tent and its surroundings, including the access path.
  • Ground: flooring, drainage, vehicle access in case of mud or frost.
  • The structure's snow and wind thresholds, warnings followed, a person named to decide on moving out.
  • Paperwork: town hall if the tent is open to the public or if your site has local rules.
  • Transport plan B and a cloakroom for guests.

FAQ

Your questions, our answers

Yes, provided you plan sized heating, lighting suited to the night, flooring that insulates from damp and a procedure for snow or wind. These points are settled with the hire company from the quote request, stating the date, venue and number of guests.

For a tent open to the public (50 people or more), article CTS 7 of the safety regulations provides for evacuation if snowfall exceeds 4 centimetres, insofar as snow accumulation on the roof could not be avoided (heating, clearing…). Ask the hire company for the values used for your structure.

Article CTS 7 provides for evacuation if the normal wind exceeds 100 km/h, unless a higher value is justified by a calculation note. For your structure, the value to use is the one given by the hire company. Also follow the Météo-France warning for your département in the days before.

The official guidance asks for generators to be placed outside buildings and for supplementary heaters not to run for more than 2 hours at a time. Combustion appliances can produce carbon monoxide: have the heating chosen and installed by the hire company.

Paperwork does not depend on the season. On private land, the length of installation and the local urban plan matter; for a tent open to the public, article CTS 1 sets the threshold (50 people) and article CTS 31 provides for the mayor's authorisation. Only your town hall can confirm what applies.

From the autumn, as for any wedding: structures, heating and the technical team are planned ahead. Describe your date, venue and number of guests in the quote request, which gets a reply within 24 h.

Plan a clearly heated area, an enclosed entrance to limit draughts, a cloakroom and an insulated floor. Santé publique France points out that cold promotes cardiovascular and respiratory conditions: think first of elderly or frail guests.
