The reception tent has become the go-to solution for turning a garden, an estate, a courtyard or a bare plot into a genuine event venue. Wedding, birthday, private reception, corporate event, opening: it offers a freedom that permanent venues do not — you choose the location, the size, the décor and the atmosphere.

But "reception tent" covers very different realities: from the modular pop-up gazebo to the prestige marquee, from the contemporary stretch tent to the glazed orangery. The right choice depends on your number of guests, your budget, your location and the effect you are after. A sizing mistake or a forgotten option (flooring, heating, ballasting) can turn a lovely idea into a source of stress.

This guide reviews the types of reception tents, the 2026 price ranges, the sizing method, the essential options and the points to check before signing a quote. It draws on the experience of more than 100 events set up every year across France.

Price benchmarks by type of reception tent (2026)

Turnkey orders of magnitude (structure + setup), excluding heavy options. The bespoke quote remains the only reliable reference.

What is a reception tent?

A reception tent is a temporary, demountable structure designed to host the public in conditions of comfort and safety close to those of a venue. It differs from a simple shelter through its engineered frame (resistance to wind and snow), its closable walls, and the ability to integrate flooring, heating, lighting and décor.

It is usually hired as a turnkey service: delivery, setup, availability during the event, then takedown and collection. This formula relieves you of all the technical logistics and guarantees a compliant installation.

The reception tent adapts to almost any ground (grass, gravel, terrace, tarmac) and to every season, provided you plan the right options. It is this versatility that makes it the leading structure of outdoor events.

The main types of reception tents

The market offers several families of structures, each with its own aesthetic and budget logic:

  • Classic marquee: PVC canvas, steel poles, large versatile volume — the best surface-to-price ratio for high capacities.
  • Nomad stretch tent: stretchy canvas on aluminium poles, an organic and contemporary silhouette, ideal for cocktails and formats under 200 people.
  • Silhouette tent (sailcloth): translucent canvas and wooden poles, a prestige look and natural light — the reference for upmarket weddings.
  • Crystal tent: transparent walls to bring in the landscape, very photogenic in front of a fine panorama.
  • Orangery & glasshouse: upmarket glazed structures, a "permanent venue" effect for exceptional receptions.
  • Pop-up gazebo & folding tent: economical modular formats for small events and annexes (bar, caterer, cloakroom).
  • Tipi, yurt, geodesic dome: structures with character for a natural, bohemian or spectacular atmosphere.

What price for a reception tent in 2026?

The price is never just the canvas: it includes the structure, delivery, setup/takedown, ballasting and the options. The differences come mainly from the type of structure, the size, the level of finish (flooring, walls, lighting, heating) and the service area.

As a guide, for a turnkey service, the orders of magnitude seen in 2026 range from a few hundred euros for a small-format pop-up gazebo to several thousand euros for a marquee or a prestige tent at a wedding of 100 to 200 guests. Flooring and dressing often account for 25 to 40 % of the quote on upmarket structures.

The table below gives benchmark ranges; only a bespoke quote, set against your date, your location and your format, gives a fair price.

Sizing your tent correctly

Sizing is the most common mistake. The professional ratios of usable surface per person are: 1 m² for a standing cocktail, 1.4 m² for a seated meal (round tables of 8), and 2 to 2.5 m² for a mixed format with a dance floor. To these surfaces you add the technical zones: bar, cloakroom, caterer, stage.

In concrete terms, for 100 guests at a seated meal, plan for 150 to 180 m²; for a mixed format with a dance floor, 200 to 250 m². A 15 % margin is better than a tent packed to capacity on the day.

Our team draws up a scale layout plan to validate the surface and the arrangement before you book.

The options not to forget

A successful reception tent rests as much on its options as on the canvas itself:

  • Flooring: essential on uneven, damp or sloping ground, and strongly recommended for seated receptions.
  • Walls: solid, glazed or open depending on the season and the effect you want.
  • Heating: as soon as the night-time temperature drops below 15 °C, even in summer.
  • Lighting: festoon lights, chandeliers, illumination — this is what creates the atmosphere in the evening.
  • Ballasting / anchoring: mandatory for safety, sized according to the ground and exposure to wind.
  • Furniture, toilet units, generator: to be coordinated for a complete service.

Points to check before signing

Before validating a quote, make sure the following items are clearly costed and included. It is on these items that most nasty surprises lie hidden.

  • Delivery, setup and takedown included (and not a hidden extra)
  • Ballasting / anchoring suited to your ground explicitly provided for
  • Setup date and time slot compatible with your caterer and your décor
  • Insurance and compliance (fire rating M2, safety file if ERP)
  • Preliminary technical visit offered for complex sites
  • Cancellation and postponement terms clearly defined

FAQ

Vos questions, nos réponses

"Reception tent" is the generic term for any temporary structure intended to host an event. The marquee is a sub-category of it: the rectangular structure with poles and PVC canvas, designed for large volumes. A reception tent can also be a stretch tent, a sailcloth, a crystal tent or an orangery. In other words: every marquee is a reception tent, but not every reception tent is a marquee.

It all depends on the type of structure, the size and the options. A small-format pop-up gazebo can be hired from a few hundred euros, while a marquee or a prestige tent for a wedding of 100 to 200 guests runs into thousands of euros once flooring, lighting and heating are added. Request a bespoke quote with your date, your location and your number of guests to get a fair price.

For 100 guests at a seated meal, plan for 150 to 180 m² (1.4 m² per person plus circulation and the service area). For a mixed format with a dance floor, count on 200 to 250 m². For a standing cocktail, 120 to 150 m² is enough. Always add a 15 % margin for comfort and the technical zones.

Yes, in the vast majority of cases: grass, gravel, stabilised earth, terrace or tarmac. The anchoring method adapts (stakes on soft ground, concrete ballast on hard ground). Sloping, damp or very uneven ground requires flooring. For complex sites, a preliminary technical visit validates feasibility.

For a temporary installation on private land, below certain surface and duration thresholds, no heavy procedure is generally required — a check with your town hall is still recommended. As soon as the tent receives the public (ERP) or exceeds certain thresholds, a safety file (CTS type) and a commission inspection may be necessary.

For the high season (May to September) and wedding weekends, book 4 to 6 months in advance, or even more for prestige structures and high capacities. In the low season or for small formats, shorter lead times are possible.
