Flooring is the "invisible" option that changes everything. You think first of the canvas, the lighting, the decor — and you forget the ground. Yet it is the ground that determines the real comfort of your guests and the stability of the table settings.

On perfectly flat, dry and hard ground, flooring is not always necessary. But as soon as there is a slope, damp, uneven ground or a seated event, flooring becomes all but essential. Nothing ruins a beautiful reception faster than muddy ground in the evening or wobbly tables.

This guide sets out the types of flooring, the situations where it is essential, the possible finishes and the budget benchmarks, so you can decide with full knowledge of the facts.

Which ground covering for your site?

A quick decision aid based on the nature and layout of the ground.

If in doubt, a technical site visit measures the slope and confirms the right solution.

The types of flooring and ground covering

Several solutions exist, from a simple covering to technical levelling flooring:

  • Wooden flooring laid on the ground: rigid panels laid on a load-spreading structure, for a flat, stable floor on even ground.
  • Flooring on jacks (technical flooring): raised and adjustable, it compensates for significant slopes and unevenness — the solution for difficult ground.
  • Finishing covering: carpet, parquet-effect flooring, tiles — laid over the flooring for the visual look.
  • Outdoor walkway: tiles or decking to link the tent to the car park or the annexes without wading through mud.
  • Dance floor: a dedicated surface (parquet, LED tiles) integrated into the main flooring.

When is flooring essential?

In these situations, flooring is not a luxury but a necessity:

  • Sloping ground: flooring on jacks brings the floor back to level (above a few % of slope, it is mandatory for comfort).
  • Damp ground or grass: damp rises in the evening and the lawn turns to mud where people walk.
  • Seated reception: stable tables and chairs, heels that don't sink in.
  • Uneven, stony or loose ground: safety and comfort when walking.
  • Prestige event: flooring instantly raises the perceived quality.
  • Winter / mid-season: it cuts the cold rising from the ground and complements the heating.

Flooring and thermal comfort

It is often forgotten: the ground is a major source of heat loss and rising damp. Under a heated tent set straight onto the lawn, some of the energy escapes into the ground.

Flooring, especially when raised, creates an insulating air gap between the earth and the reception. It clearly improves how warm it feels and reduces the need for heating — one more argument for autumn and winter events.

Budget and logistics

The cost of flooring depends on the area, the type (laid on the ground vs on jacks) and the finish. Technical flooring on jacks, which requires more equipment and setup time, is appreciably more expensive than flooring laid on flat ground.

On the logistics side, the flooring is laid before the decoration and the table settings: it must therefore be built into the setup schedule (often the day before). On complex ground, a prior technical site visit measures the slope and confirms the solution.

It is a line item that can represent a significant share of the quote on a large area — but it is also one of the most worthwhile in terms of comfort and look.

FAQ

Vos questions, nos réponses

No, not systematically. On flat, hard and dry ground (a terrace, for example), flooring may be superfluous. But as soon as there is a slope, damp, uneven ground or a seated reception, it becomes all but essential for comfort, stability and look. For a wedding or a prestige event, it is almost always recommended.

Technical flooring on jacks. Its adjustable feet compensate for the slope and the unevenness to give a perfectly flat surface. It is the go-to solution for sloping gardens, undulating meadows or uneven ground. Above a few percent of slope, it is essential.

The price depends on the area, the type (laid on the ground or on jacks) and the finish. Flooring on flat ground is relatively affordable, whereas technical flooring on jacks, which is more complex to lay, represents a higher budget. On a large area it is a significant line item — but one of the most worthwhile for comfort and perceived quality.

Yes. The ground is a major source of heat loss and rising damp. Flooring, especially when raised, creates an insulating air gap between the earth and the reception, improves how warm it feels and reduces the need for heating. It is a real asset for autumn and winter events.

Yes. Flooring adapts to most hard surfaces (gravel, tarmac, slabs). On hard ground, laying it is generally simpler and quicker than on loose or sloping ground. The finish (carpet, parquet) is then chosen according to the look you want.

Just after the structure is set up and before the decoration and the table settings, generally the day before. The flooring governs all the following steps: it must therefore be built in early in the setup schedule, especially on large areas and complex ground.
